In December I joined a large production at Powder Mountain in Utah to photograph a campaign collaboration between GMC Sierra and Natural Selection Tour. The shoot brought together a sizable creative team working across still photography and motion to produce a series of pieces centered around the Natural Selection ethos of riding natural terrain in big mountain environments.
This project came together quickly as a last minute addition to the winter calendar. Early season conditions made the production more challenging than expected. Snowpack in the Wasatch was still thin at the time, which meant the crew had to work carefully to find zones that looked good on camera. Despite the low snowpack the team was able to produce strong visuals centered around Travis Rice and the Natural Selection environment at Powder Mountain.
I was brought in to photograph still imagery alongside the motion team while they captured the primary campaign footage. Working within a large multi department crew like this always creates an interesting dynamic for still photography. Motion production typically drives the schedule and the visual direction, so the challenge is finding moments that translate well into still frames while staying flexible with the evolving plan on the mountain.
This Powder Mountain production was one of two shoots I participated in tied to the GMC Sierra and Natural Selection collaboration. More work to come.
