If you want to get off the beaten path, be a granola hippi in the desert & get away from everything then head to the Steens Mountains. The Steens are one the most remote mountain ranges in Oregon, with the closest town being Frenchglen (population of 11.)

One of the most beautiful places I've ever seen. It always amazes me how few people ever travel to the eastern part of the state. Most of 'em don't go east much past about Costco.
