Nye County | Nevada Wilderness Project

on Saturday, October 31, 2009

"No Where", Nevada. Mention Nye County to most people and they scratch there heads, wondering where it is. Well, it's far from being "No Where", especially to the small population of 44,000 residence who rely on the massive 2,000sq miles for there livelihood. The ratio of population to land creates vast land that's forgotten, neglected, cow food, and unfortunately has fallen to the wayside.

Nevada Wilderness Project had me come down to photograph some of the enormously beautiful landscape in the county that the organization is working on to create into wilderness. Petroglyph Butte, Red Mountain, and Lunar Crater are only a few geographical token areas that Nye County has to offer.

John Tull -(Biologist for Nevada Wilderness Project) taking it easy in a Aspen grove. Wallace Canyon, NV.

Built Ford Tough. 100 miles from any town, this rental took a flat for the team and a couple hours in the shop.

Rerouters. Tull (above) trying to search out hot springs but it seems as though the cows won again. Farmers rerouted the natural hot-springs to their private land to water their cattle.

A nice scene to wake up to. Nye County, NV.

Pronghorn Antelope along "Antelope Range Wilderness Study Area."

Right outside of a town called "Current", which is not so current, there is a place called Red Mountain. It has amazing rock features, shallow caves, and slabby, sketchy climbing, that made it a fun little Wilderness Study Area to explore.

Mountain Short Horned Lizard.

Current Mountain.

Tull hiking with Blue Eagle Wilderness Study Area in the background.

Petroglyph Butte.

Awesome view from inside a volcano crater. Lunar Crater, NV.

Heart shaped rock in Lunar Crater.

Setting up camp with Easy Chair Crater in the back.

Lunar Crater at night is pretty amazing but it was crazy how much air traffic there was. I blame Vegas for that one.
